Laminate flooring installation
Laminate flooring installation
Installing laminate flooring is a popular choice for DIY projects due to its relatively straightforward process. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
- Clean the Subfloor: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Remove any debris, nails, or other obstacles.
- Check for Level: Use a level to check for any uneven spots. Fill low spots with a floor-leveling compound and sand down any high spots.
Step 2: Acclimate the Flooring
- Leave the laminate flooring in the room where it will be installed for at least 48 hours. This allows the planks to acclimate to the room’s temperature and humidity.
Step 3: Install the Underlayment
- Roll Out Underlayment: Lay the underlayment across the subfloor. Butt the edges together, but don't overlap them. Secure with tape if necessary.
- Trim: Cut the underlayment to fit the room, ensuring it covers the entire floor.

Step 4: Plan Your Layout
- Measure the Room: Determine the best layout to minimize small cuts at the edges. Typically, you want to start along the longest wall.
- Stagger Joints: Plan to stagger the joints by at least 8-12 inches between rows to create a more stable and visually appealing floor.
Step 5: Install the First Row
- Add Spacers: Place spacers between the wall and the planks to allow for expansion (usually 1/4 inch).
- Lay the First Plank: Place the first plank in the corner with the groove side facing the wall.
- Continue the Row: Connect the next plank by aligning the tongue into the groove of the first plank. Tap gently with a mallet and tapping block if needed.
Step 6: Install Subsequent Rows
- Stagger the Joints: Start the second row with a shorter plank to stagger the joints. Insert the tongue of the plank at a slight angle into the groove of the row above, then lay it flat.
- Use the Tapping Block: Tap the plank into place with the tapping block and mallet.
- Cut Planks as Needed: Use a saw to cut planks to fit at the end of rows or around obstacles like doorways.
Step 7: Fit the Last Row
- Measure and Cut: Measure the width needed for the last row, subtracting space for the expansion gap. Cut the planks accordingly.
- Install: Use a pull bar to fit the last row snugly into place.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
- Remove Spacers: Once all planks are installed, remove the spacers.
- Install Baseboards or Molding: Attach baseboards or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap.
- Clean the Floor: Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove any installation debris.
Step 9: Allow for Expansion
- Avoid placing heavy furniture immediately after installation to allow the flooring to adjust. Ensure the room has proper humidity control to prevent expansion or contraction.
With patience and attention to detail, you can achieve a professional-looking laminate floor installation.
